Waste Water Recovery and Recycle

A major platform of Radford’s Environment Improvement Plan is to build self-sufficiency and security in water supply. Reflecting this objective, Radfords have undertaken a major capital works investment to capture, treat to potable grade and recycle substantially all of its processing effluent water.
If adopted throughout the Australian red meat industry, this industry first project has the potential to generate national savings of over 13 Gigalitres of water per year. Accordingly, the project has attracted significant funding support from AusIndustry through the Re-Tooling for Climate Change program.

Gippsland Business Awards confers Hall of Fame status on Radfords

Hall of Fame 2008

Hall of Fame

The 2008 Gippsland Business Awards presentation honoured Radfords as one of only six organizations ever inducted into the GBA “Hall of Fame” and the first Baw Baw based business to receive this tribute.

Over the ten years of the GBA’s, Radfords have achieved not less than finalist status in the nine nominations we have made including; Agriculture, Environment and Sustainability, Manufacturing, Retail and Transport and Logistics. Achieving Hall of Fame status reflects this sustained effort and achievement across all facets of our business and, as a perpetual acknowledgment of this success, further enhances Radfords reputation for
Leading Victoria in Meat Processing.

Radfords again voted as Gippsland’s best example of Environment and Sustainable Business Practice

As well as being inducted in the Hall of Fame, winning the Gippsland Business Awards “Environment & Sustainable Business Practice” accolade for the second year in a row is a welcomed endorsement of Radfords success in coordinating continued growth with reducing our environmental footprint.

Echoing their success of 2004 and 2007, Radfords were again selected finalists in the three Gippsland Business Awards categories entered in 2008.
Whilst success in the Manufacturing category might be considered an expectation, Radfords were particularly pleased to have the Transport & Logistics element of their operation recognised is both critical to the business and amongst the best in Gippsland.

Fleet Expansion

Consistent with our ongoing assessment on our Environmental Sustainability, Radfords have recently acquired two fleet vehicles sized to suit specific delivery requirements. Our new van enables efficient and prompt deliveries within our immediate region, whilst our new 12 tonne truck better services our Melbourne and Metropolitan customers. Both vehicles provide fuel and cost efficiency whilst further reducing our overall carbon emissions.

Plant Expansion and Enhancements

Plant Expansion and Enhancements

Radfords were understandably pleased at the commitment given in December 07 by Russell Broadbent  that the (then) Federal Government would provide some $650,000 to support the expansion and enhancement of our facilities, an investment they recognized would facilitate and stimulate growth and expansion along Radfords entire supply chain. We were equally pleased that this commitment was echoed by labour’s Christine Maxfield, the alternate local member for McMillan.

Anticipating that this funding will be available in the very near future, Radfords will undertake the following major works and business development projects:

Boning Room completion (phase 2) and plant integration; requires installation of additional purpose built and state-of-the-art processing equipment and substantial expansion of our refrigeration capacity including additional offal, lamb and boned/boxed meat fridges and additional freezers.

Export Market Development – Visit to Brunei

Visit to Brunei

Radfords were honoured to participate in last years Baw Baw Shire business delegation to Brunei and the first hand knowledge and appreciation of Brunei’s and similar markets’ “appetites” has determined that we accelerate our Offal Room expansion and upgrade. Our visit incorporated discussions on Victorian producers supplying to Brunei’s intended global halal market realizing almost immediate demand for gelatine supply and a consequential upgrade of our by-product processing plant. Providing expert advice and consultation and staff training at our plant are other opportunities to emerge from our first sojourn in the international market place.

--------------------------------------------------------

Systems Integration

Robert Radford

Early in 2007, Radfords were approached by the (Vic) Department of Primary Industry to develop “Cut to Carcass” traceability systems and protocols; the missing link in the National Livestock Identification System. Following completion of this project and with the further support of DPI, Radfords will integrate this traceability system with all complimentary systems and procedures (purchasing, processing, sales, logistics, accounting and administration) with an expected significant increase in overall efficiencies.

Radfords recognize the fundamental need to ensure our business is environmentally sustainable and further investment in sophisticated effluent processing and irrigation systems we will continue our efforts to minimize our “footprint” on the environment.

“Kochies” interest in Radford’s activities extended a scheduled “brief” interview to over ten minutes!

My Business Awards 2007

The significance of a Victorian company receiving an award sponsored by the NSW Business Chamber was not lost on the audience of over 300 as Rob Radford received the award from NSWBC’s Paul Orton who remarked:

“Radfords are an excellent example of a successful and sustainable regional business that is using best practice in their industry and making a positive contribution to their local community.”

Radfords acknowledged the Best Regional Business by the national My Business Awards.

As a first time entrant, Radfords are understandably proud to be honoured by these prestigious national awards. In a gala night at Sydney’s Darling Harbour Managing Director Robert Radford received the award from business guru David Koch to the applause of high achievers from all corners of the country.

The award, sponsored by the NSW Business Chamber, recognizes Radford’s commitment to the ongoing development and improvement of their business, their industry and their host region. Host region applauds Radfords as Gippsland’s best example of Environment and Sustainable Business Practice.

The presentation of the 2007 Gippsland Business Awards attracted some 450 of the regions leaders in business best practice to acknowledge and acclaim the forty-one finalist selected in eleven award categories.

Echoing their success of 2004, Radfords were again selected finalists in the three categories they entered. In 2004, Agriculture, Environment and Sustainable Business Practice and Retail best reflected Radfords endeavours at that time and winning the Agriculture award clearly acknowledged Radfords development as a vital component of the regions predominant agricultural economy.

The intervening three years has seen Radfords make significant investment in plant and equipment particularly in establishing and equipping a state-of-the-art boning room and related infrastructure. This expanded capability for value-adding wholesale products resulted in achieving 2007 finalist status in Manufacturing as well as Agriculture and Environment.

As with any business, Radfords various activities and responsibilities are interdependent and it was without surprise that the developments giving rise to Radford’s first-time nomination in the Manufacturing category, also enhanced their efforts to ensure best practice in all they do and delivered the winners trophy this years award for Environment and Sustainable Business Practice.

Earlier that day, MD Robert Radford had also been notified of his selection as one of three finalists for this year’s Regional Achiever accolade under the Regional Achievement & Community Awards. Notably, Radfords were also selected semi-finalist in the categories of Business Achievement and Environment and Sustainability.  As first time entrants to these state-wide awards, Radfords are understandably delighted to have their efforts recognised and favourably assessed against organizations from throughout regional Victoria

Receiving this local, state-wide and national recognition in the space of a few weeks, across many industry sectors and for a range of activities and endeavours clearly demonstrates Radfords commitment to be - Leaders in Meat Processing.
